  • Ease of Use
  • Grip/ Handle
  • Build Quality
  • Durability

Testing out potato peelers turned out to be good fun. We put the OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler to the test and the first thing we noted about this was its grip. The handle was extremely comfortable, and the oversize in particular helped us maintain our grip. With the built-in potato eye remover we were able to get identical textures at the end while the twin blades got through even the most roughest of patches. Washing the peeler wasn’t a problem as well. It is dishwasher safe making it a perfect all rounder.

Why our reviews are trustworthy

I have covered kitchen appliances like the best toasters, the best coffee makers and the best ice cube trays for a number of years and have logged countless hours of research and testing. We’ve looked at a lot of different types of vegetable peelers and consulted with experts and chefs to create this review each year.

Did you know that Joe Ades, known as the “Gentleman Peeler,” was a well-known potato peeler seller in New York City?

We spend time to keep up with reviews from other organizations that also review kitchen products, like, Which?, Consumer Search and Good Housekeeping though we do find that the information is not as readily available as it could be. Then we do perform our own product testing of vegetable peelers by ourselves and selected members of our consumer product testing panels who also provide their feedback.

*This review covers the best vegetable peelers available before and since the first time we created this review.

Our Other Top Picks:

How we began the test selection process

We started the selection process by making a list of all of the best vegetable peelers that we could find for sale online and in stores. We listed 36 ice trays for this category.

We combed through thousands of reviews to be able to bring you the most insightful help on the best vegetable peeler reviews available. And there are all sorts of things to consider: the materials used, the size, and the type of peeler (straight, swivel or Y shaped). There are three basic styles of vegetable peelers out there, cutting vegetables into every size and shape imaginable.

We found in our research that a Y peeler or (as they are sometimes called ) speed peeler has a blade that is perpendicular to the grip handle, a design that kind of resembles a safety razor. It is used with a similar action to the razor too, by shaving off the vegetables skin in strips parallel to the handle. Most Y peelers have an ‘eye gouger’ at the end of the blade, a loop of metal used to dig out eyes and blemishes from a potato.

A straight peeler has a blade that is parallel to the handle and features a fixed blade that does not pivot. While swivel type peelers have the blade mounted on a pivot. So the angle of the blade is self-adjusted as increased pressure is applied during use. The Jonas peeler for example was designed in Sweden. Some designs work better than others, however, they all succeeded in peeling the vegetables in our tests.

After one or two heated debates between us about the above specifications and which peelers were better, we were able to get the list down to the 13 vegetable peelers we selected to be brought in for testing.

How we tested them

The primary task of any peeler is to enable you to peel your vegetables with as little effort as possible. This year to test the peelers, we chose consumers from our product testing panelists for them to test them at home, and also got the peelers ready for ourselves.  Each panelist, once they had their products available started by noting down the key features like build quality, blade size and length, weight, grip and other basic information for each peeler.

Then with the clear testing instructions, which were to use the peelers during food preparation, and to monitor the effectiveness of each peeler and note down the score for each one after we had used them for a week at a time. So, armed with the products, we started incorporating them into our food preparation routines for the two months and monitored results.

Once the two months were up and we had finished testing all the peelers, the score sheets were submitted and the results were worked out to find out which ones came out as the top rated vegetable peelers.  Then we took some time to  look at the latest prices and found our picks were not the peelers that cost the most.
