Thayers Rose Petal Facial Toner
Thayers Alcohol-free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera
Why are our reviews are trustworthy?
We have covered facial toners for some time here, over those years we have logged hundreds of hours of research and testing to find the best facial toners for most people (I need them too). We’ve looked at huge number of them and consulted with skin and beauty experts (sources at the end) to create and keep this review up to date each year.
We are always up to date with other organisations that also test or review products, such as, Sephora, Allure and Total Beauty, though we do find that the coverage on these products is not as comprehensive as it could be.
Then we do our own testing of face toners and select our consumer product testing members (including me), to product test them at home and provide their feedback through our product testing panels.
This review covers the best facial tones available since the last time we created this guide:
Our Other Top Picks:MAC Prep+Prime Fix + Finishing Mist (Best face toner for sensitive skin) Neutrogena Rapid Clear 2-in-1 Fight & Fade Toner(Best budget face toner) Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner (Best face toner for oily skin) NARS Multi-Action Hydrating Toner(Best face toner for mature skin)
Who should get these?
The answer is not all of us:
Toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin like me, or for those of us who want extra cleansing after wearing makeup or other heavy skin products such as sun screen.
When it comes to facial toners, most of us will go to amazing lengths in order to find that perfect product. Trying to find that one toner that will remove oil, restore Ph balance quickly, giving the appearance of smaller pores and a fresher look on the move. We will spend all of our money on toners that we think work for us (I did anyway), reading reviews until my head spins and, of course, allowing experts and makeup artists on TV and magazines to convince us that their product is the best.
That’s a hell of a lot of work for a product that shouldn’t even really get noticed, don’t you think?
So hoping to put an end to all this maddness and to hopefully save time and hassle, I am sharing with you what we found in the pretty extensive research and testing we carry out.
Are you looking to get that beautiful look and need a better facial toner?
Then you are ready to take the next step then take a look at these 13 best facial toners on the market to add to your daily facial routine.
How we began the test selection process
We listed 28 facial toners in the selection for this review:
First thing was to compile the list of all of the best facial toners that could be found both online and in stores. By combing through literally, thousands of reviews (some of which were the fiunniest comments I’ve ever heard!), so that we could bring you the most insightful information on the best facial toners to buy.
There are many things you need to get right:
Like all cosmetics, a face toner is personal to you:
We removed face toners with any controversial ingredients in them. I know that there are ingredients that are perfectly acceptable to me (and the rest of us) and my friends might run a mile, so in order for a toner to be cut loose, the ingredients had to increase the risk of skin irritation and/ or cause an increase in the risk of clogging pores or sun damage.
A few of the controversial ingredients we removed:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
- Retinol retinyl acetate
- Oxybenzone and octinoxate
- Diazolidinyl urea
From the extensive research we managed to carry out, we whittled the list down to the 14 toners to be tested.
How we tested them
The first things we had to get done was to select a cross section of people in terms of skin type, age and lifestyle from our product testing program and then provide the toners for the chosen people to test at home, and also got them ready for ourselves. Our panel this year was more varied and diverse than ever.
Then each of us incorporated them into our daily beauty routines for up to a week at a time, then scored them on which ones helped remove excess oils and dead skin cells from our face after washing and how they made our skin feel.
When we finished testing all the toners and all of the scoresheets were in, we analyized the results to find out which came out on top this year. After that we looked at the current retail prices, I was not suprised to find that our favorite picks were not the most expensive.
You don’t always get what you pay for:

Facial Toner Buying Guide
Facial toners are an essential part of any skincare routine, and a quality facial toner will greatly benefit any skin type. Facial toners can shrink the appearance of pores and help to smooth out uneven face tones. If you frequently deal with irritating skin issues, a facial toner can assist in balancing your skin to an ideal pH level. Balanced skin levels also help to make your makeup last longer and look better by creating healthy skin.
With this in mind, it is never too early to start caring for your skin. The earlier you start to develop your skincare routine, the more your skin benefits from the love and care you invest in it. Taking the time to choose the products that best benefit your routine will result in beautiful, youthful skin, and no skincare routine is complete without an excellent face toner.
With so many facial toners on the market, how do you determine which is the best face toner for your skincare needs? There are a few things to take into consideration before purchasing a toner that will complement your routine. Below we will address some of the most important factors that you must consider when buying facial toners, starting with determining your skin type.
What Is Your Skin Type?
Determining your skin type is the most important step in deciding which toner is right for you. Every toner has different properties that work with different skin types. Because of this, everyone requires a differing skincare regime that will allow them to achieve the optimal level of care. Before we give you tips on determining your skin type and how to match it up with a facial toner, let’s look at a brief overview of the different skin types to give you a better understanding of what type of skin you may have.
Normal Skin – Normal skin types produce a normal amount of oil and will have excellent circulation. It is soft, youthful, and smooth with an even face tone. This skin type will best benefit from a facial toner that helps to keep their skin balanced and supple. Pores for this skin type are often not noticed.
Dry Skin – Dry skin produces low levels of sebum (oil) and usually requires a skin regimen that helps it to maintain a proper level of oil for the skin. Small pores and flaky skin are characteristic of this skin type. Dry skin often feels tight and slightly uncomfortable after washing. People with dry skin may experience cracking, redness, itchiness, dry patches, peeling, and a dull complexion. The best facial toner for dry skin will assist in moisturizing the skin.
Oily Skin – Oily skin produces too much oil for the skin due to overactive sebaceous glands. This skin type often appears shiny. Enlarged pores and acne breakouts are traits of this skin type. If you blot oily skin with a tissue, the oil is visible on the tissue. The best facial toner for oily skin will include ingredients that will help to soak up the excessive oil produced by the skin.
Sensitive Skin – Sensitive skin often has adverse reactions to certain products and foods. These reactions can be caused by many things such as skin conditions or allergies. Sensitive skin is easily irritated and can become inflamed with the slightest provocation. The best facial toner for sensitive skin will be gentle and not contain many ingredients that could cause itchiness, redness, or burning.
Combination Skin – Combination skin usually produces excessive oil in the T-zone area consisting of the nose, chin, and forehead while the cheek, mouth, and eye areas tend to be normal or dry. Pores for this skin type can be a combination of large pores in the oily areas and small pores in the normal or dry areas.. The best facial toner for combination skin will be able to treat both areas of the skin.
Now that you have a working understanding of the different types of skins and an idea of which facial toners will work best for each skin type, you’ll want to perform a simple test to ascertain which skin type best describes your skin.
Wash your face thoroughly, removing any makeup, oil, and dirt, but don’t wash your skin too roughly, as you don’t want to irritate your skin. After you’ve completed washing your skin, allow it to dry and return to its normal state. While it’s tempting, don’t touch your face during the drying process as your fingers can add oils and dirt back to your face. Examine the size of your pores and consider how your skin feels after cleaning your face. After familiarizing yourself with your skin type, it’s time to choose what facial toner you will need for your skincare routine.
Choosing the Right Toner for Your Skin Type
In the previous section, you learned about the different skin types and the facial toners that will be most beneficial for each skin type. You should also know your skin type and should be ready to learn which face toner to purchase for your regimen. Next, we will provide you more in-depth tips for choosing a face toner that will match your skin type.
Balanced Toners – If you have normal skin, look for balanced facial toners that will keep your skin at peak condition.
Hydrating Toners – Hydrating face toners are best for dry skin. Toners that contain ingredients like glycolipids, glycolic acid, jojoba oil, rose hip seed oil, and other hydrating ingredients will help to moisturize dry skin. Look for facial toners that leave dry skin replenished and address sensitivity issues caused by dryness. As a general rule, people with dry skin should avoid any facial toners that contain petrolatum, ammonium laurel sulfate, ethanol, alcohol and other drying agents.
Refreshing Toners – If you suffer from oily skin, you will want to invest in a facial toner that will gently clean the skin. Look for toners that will minimize the appearance of pores while giving a healthy glow to your skin. While alcohol can dry up oil, it could potentially dry out the skin too much and cause the skin to produce even more oil as a result. Use face toners that are oil-free and contain AHA, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium PCA. Along with alcohol, avoid any toners that include drying ingredients such as mineral oil and petrolatum.
Gentle Toners – A mild face toner is best for people with sensitive skin. If you suffer from sensitive skin, avoid facial toners that have acids or alcohol. White tea extract and other ingredients that have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties are important for sensitive skin care. Using facial toners with glycerin and avoiding facial toners with synthetic fragrances, dyes, alcohol, or toners containing ammonium or sodium lauryl sulfate is also important.
Two Toners for Combination Skin – Using two facial toners for combination skin isn’t unusual. There aren’t too many face toners on the market that can address the concerns that come with having combination skin. Typically people with combination skin experience oiler skin in the warmer months and drier skin in the cooler months and will want to buy their toners accordingly. You’ll want a refreshing toner for the warmer months and a hydrating toner for the cooler months.
Before You Purchase a Facial Toner
When purchasing a facial toner, there are a few things that you’ll want to follow while making your selections. Keeping these tips in mind will ensure that you choose a product that provides great results and become an important part of your skincare regimen.
Always Check the Ingredients – Always make sure to choose a facial toner that doesn’t include the ingredients that could work against your skin type. Keeping a list on hand while shopping for a face toner would be helpful.
Avoid Tough Astringents – Products that contain ingredients such as denatured alcohol, menthol, or witch hazel are often too tough for any skin type. These ingredients strip the skin of its natural oil and works against keeping your skin healthy.
Choose Pure and All-Natural Products – Synthetic fragrances cause skin irritations. Toners that include things such as synthetic fragrances and unnatural dyes often react negatively to any skin type and should be avoided at all costs.
Avoid Cheap Products – You want to make an investment in your skin and its future health. While you don’t have to buy the most expensive products on the market, you’ll want to buy facial toners that are high quality. Higher quality products usually cost more than cheaper products, but you can still find quality face toners that will fit your budget.
Choosing a quality facial toner is just one step in a complete skincare regime. After cleansing your face with a good cleanser, you can use your face toner to remove any leftover dirt from your skin and prepare to use the next products in your skincare regime. Skin that has been thoroughly cleaned will absorb moisturizer and other facial products better which results in healthier, better skin.
