This is a 3 in 1 featured electric lawn trimmer that works on a 32 volt max lithium battery. Trimming grass was a bliss for us using this grass trimmer, with an entire chest of power and function in our hand. The battery in particular was responsible for uninterrupted power and ran for 35 minutes in normal mode. There was a quick release trigger that allowed us to make the height adjustments while a front auxiliary handle relieved a lot of stress from the hand holding the battery powered string trimmer.

Why our reviews are trustworthy

We have covered all sorts of gardening equpiment here, including cordless weed eaters/ trimmers/ whackers (why so many names for the same product?!) for a few years now.

Did you know Weed Eater was actually string trimmer manufacturing company based in Houston, Texas founded in 1971, by the inventor of the device, a George C. Ballas?

Since we started covering them, we have looked at large number of different types of string trimmers and completed a lot of research and consulted with experts (see credits at the end) to create this review each year. We keep up with what other noteworthy organizations that also test or review these products, such as, ConsumerReports and Amazon are up to, plus we keep up to date with the manufacturers, so we know when a new product is going to hit the market. Then we do our own testing of cordless weed trimmers by selecting experts, ourselves and members of our consumer product testing programs who test the products for us and provide us with their feedback.

*This review covers best cordless weed trimmers available before and since the last time we created this guide.

Who should get these

If you are wanting to save time and hassle, a string trimmer weed eater essentially picks up where a lawn mower leaves off, providing the finishing touches to your yard as it whisks away grass around obstacles like flower beds, driveways, trees and shrubs that are more difficult to get to with your mower.

So you either want to get one for the first time or if you have one already that is not performing as it should or is bust all together, then take a look at the best cordless string trimmers on this list and ask yourself:

“Self, would you say such great things about your current string trimmer?”

If the answer is no, it’s time to get yourself a better with the aid of our honest buying guide, that will help you to discover the features that are going to be most important to you, along with our unbiased ratings to help you choose the right one.

How we began the selection process

We started by making a list of all of the top rated cordless string trimmers that we could find for sale online and in hardware stores. We then sifted through, thousands of consumer reviews and study papers to bring you the most helpful, insightful guide on the top rated cordless string trimmers. We have listed 36 products this year alone.

There are so many variables to get right: the build quality, the sting length and cutting diameter, the weight, the grip, the battery life, the power output and not forgetting the noise level. There are many types of  battery powered string trimmer out there, and choosing the right one for you is going to make your purchase a success or failure.

So here’s what we looked at:

Cutting Diameter

Trimmers that are 13 inches or there about are usually more efficient, so don’t need as much power to keep the spinning speed right. This is where a professional would recommend a 15-inch model, but unless you are a landscape gardener, then anything above 13 inches is going to do a great job, remember the guard has a cutter that is designed to keep the line from exceeding the maximum length.

Line Diameter

Trimming grass and weeds takes no time when you get the line thickness right. The machine needs to have a good line thickness so the line does not break easily, we recommend using 0.080 inch trimmer line, if you need thicker then most of these string trimmers will take the 0.095 inch line too.

Line Changes

Let’s face, it line changes can be a pain, but something we all have to do. Some of the trimmers we tested have intuitive and simple changes that can be made in just a few minutes or less, while others were more traditional.

Battery Life

When it comes to weed trimming, you really want to be able to finish the job in one go rather than having to charge midway through leaving your yard looking half done.  So we took our time to find trimmers that will let you finish the task with a single charge

A compact and lightweight design enables you to use the machine comfortably and safely. A lightweight design is needed to increase the maneuverability of the machine. Moreover, a compact design also aims to reduce the stress on your arms and shoulders.

Good Grip

A good grip is important when you are handling dangerous products such as string trimmers. The handle should enable you to get a great grip, to enable you to complete the job with ease.

Swivel Handle

Adjustable handles on the string trimmer can make the product more comfortable and convenient to use. The option to make adjustments enables you to cut low weeds and grass with ease.

Power Output

A powerful motor in combination with the line diameter determines how the machine will work with high levels of efficiency. A motor facilitates gear reduction and increases the durability of the machine. The motor design improves the control and precision to a further extent, while reducing both the noise and vibration.

Noise Level

We looked at the noise level of each string trimmer, to ensure that the decibel level is not too high when it is being operated. A reduced noise level enables you to enjoy the high performance capacity of the machine without disturbing your neighbors to much.

So, after a few heated debates about the above specifications and which weed trimmers were the best, we eventually got the number of models down to the 15 we brought in for testing.

How we tested them

Let’s face it, a cordless weed trimmer is there to enable you to trim your edges, to make your yard neat with as little effort as possible along the way, right?

So this year to test the weed trimmers, we selected participants from our product testing program and then sent the trimmers out (via FedEx, thanks guys!) for them to test in their yards, while we got them ready for our in-house panelists (and ourselves).  Once everyone had their cordless trimmers, each panelist started by noting down the key features like the build quality, the sting length and cutting diameter, the weight, the grip, the battery life and the power output for each machine.

After that the thing we all needed to do was to get the trimmers on charge and noted down how long they took, and when they were ready, we used an app to check how noisy each machine was and made a note of the decibel level. Then we got out into our yards to use the weed trimmers for around trees, shrubs and long the driveway, before scoring them on how they performed and how long the charge lasted.

After a couple of weeks the testing was all completed, so all of our participants handed in the scorecards and we waited to find out the final order of the top rated cordless string trimmers and here they are, we hope they help you make a great purchase!

Why Buy A Cordless String Trimmer?

If you live in suburbia, in a small town or rural area or are lucky enough to have a house of your own in a big city, you probably have a lawn. Keeping the lawn, whether it’s in your front yard or backyard, looking good is not an easy task. You need at least a lawn mower, maybe even a riding lawn mower and an electric or cordless weed eater to ensure that your yard doesn’t begin to look like Shere Khan could hide in there.

String trimmers are ideal for trimming and giving a neat look to the grass that your lawn mower can’t reach. They are given a variety of names such as line trimmers, weed whackers, grass trimmers and weed eaters. The power source can vary. There are battery string trimmers, which as the name suggests run on batteries and are also called cordless weed eaters, and electric weed wackers that require a power source such as an electric power point to work. The way they work doesn’t vary. The appliance has a cutting head that is speedily turned by a power source. The head uses hardy, nylon line to trim grass and weeds.

Whether you use a battery powered weed wacker or an electric lawn trimmer, you need to make certain that you wear safety equipment before working with the appliance. The cordless weed eater can go through tree bark, ruin a wood deck and fling remains up to a distance of fifty feet. Always hold the tool at an angle away from your body. Wear goggles to protect your eyes and gloves to cover your hands. It is also advisable when using a cordless weed eater to wear long clothes that cover your skin so you aren’t hurt by any debris that is flying around.

What Should You Look for in a String Trimmer?

Spring trimmers whether cordless or electric come with a wide variety of features. You should take these into consideration before deciding which cordless weed eater or electric weed wacker is for you.

Remember that you will be carrying the battery powered string trimmer around for some time. You will need to ensure that you can deal with the entire weight of the tool because that is what you will be hauling around. Try to find one that is lightweight, can be carried comfortably and moved around easily. Some cordless weed eaters or weed eaters that are electric have shoulder straps for you to move the string trimmer around without your arms tiring easily. Check out cordless weed trimmer reviews to determine what is best for you.

Safety Guards

As mentioned earlier, a cordless weed eater or an electric lawn trimmer can be a very powerful tool. Look for one that comes with a safety shield that is large enough to protect you from flying debris. However, make sure that you wear protective clothing such as goggles, gloves and long clothes that cover your skin so that you are protected from injuries due to the flying debris.

A Trigger Lock

Cordless weed eaters come with push buttons that help you start up the tool very easily. However, this same ease-of-use can be a problem if the trimmer comes on accidentally. For such trimmers, look for a trigger lock that will prevent the trimmer from switching on automatically before you are ready. Remember that the switch should be in a spot that is easy to reach.

Powerful Trimming

If the grass on your lawn is very tall, or you are dealing with stubborn weeds, you need a cordless weed eater or an electric string trimmer that is more powerful than most. You need one that has dual nylon lines and each line is more than 0.8 inches thick. The thicker these lines are the more easily you will be able to trim stubborn vegetation.

Noise Levels

Most of the time you will find that the noise generated by an electric spring trimmer is much less than the one produced by a gas powered trimmer. You might need to wear protection for your ears so that the constant whine does not damage your hearing.

Additional Features

In addition to these features, there are some additional points that you will need to keep in mind before deciding upon the best string trimmer for you.

Clean Finish

Depending upon the string trimmer you’re using, you may have to turn the entire tool or it may have a head that swivels for you to be able to get the perfect position for edging. Regardless of which one you have, you need one that maintains its balance at the angle for edging, doesn’t block your ability to see the area that is being trimmed and still manages to leave a proper edge. Read battery string trimmer reviews to figure out which one will work best for you.

Low Vibration

Vibration is an issue that is found mostly in gas-powered trimmers rather than the cordless weed eaters. If you use a gas-powered trimmer for any length of time, you may find that your arms are really tired and your hands are numb from the constant vibration. Look for weed wackers that come with anti-vibration technology to reduce the stress on your arms and hands.

Good Balance

Since the weed wacker is such a powerful tool, you need to ensure that the one you have stays at the proper angle without you having to struggle too much. A top mount motor is ideal for this. A good string trimmer also comes with shafts that allow you to adjust the length of the tool according to your height. This makes it easy to use and maneuver.

Maintaining your lawn to look its best is no longer the chore it once was. There are plenty of tools to help you ensure that your yard looks neat, clean and attractive. A good string trimmer gives you the kind of edging that ensures that no stray weeds or grass has escaped your reach.
