Why our reviews are trustworthy

I have been covering beauty and cuticle creams for a long time now, logging hundreds of hours of research and testing in that time (it’s no great hardship, I need great cuticles too). We’ve looked at a large number of cuticle creams to create this review. We keep up with reviews from other noteworthy companies that also test or review beauty products, such as, Total Beauty, Amazon and Sephora though we do find that the coverage is not as comprehensive as it could be for this category. Then we do our own testing of cuticle creams with ourselves, experts and selected product testers, to product test them at home and provide their feedback through our product testing panel.

*This review covers the best cuticle creams on the market before and since the last time we created this review.

Who should get this?

Everyone…When it comes to cuticle creams, most of us will go to amazing lengths in order to find that perfect product to prevent cracked fingers. That one product to heal and moisturize them and give the best flawless finish. We will spend all of our money on various creams we have heard about in reviews until our heads spin and, of course, allow nail and hand experts in magazine advertorials and on TV to convince us that their cream is the best for your hands. Well, in order to put an end to this advertising madness and to hopefully save you time and hassle by sharing with you the results of our extensive research and testing.

How we began the test selection process

We started by making a list of all of the top rated cuticle creams that we could find for sale both on the high street and online. We listed 23 in the original selection process for this category.

Cuticle creams, like all other beauty creams, are personal to you. To choose one, you need to have a deep knowledge of your own hands and nails. We combed through thousands of reviews to bring you the most helpful, insightful information about the best-rated cuticle creams. These creams are the winners among a sea of mediocre products out there.

So before you make your decision, take a look at the cuticle creams on this list and ask yourself: “Self, would you say such lovely things about the cream you just used?” If the answer is no, it’s time to hit the drugstore or beauty counter to get yourself a new one with the help of our review.

We started by looking at the basics, so we removed creams with controversial ingredients.  We know there are some ingredients that makes one person shudder but is completely shrugged off by someone else. So to warrant being given the chop, ingredients had to increase the risk of clogging pores or cause an increase in the risk of sun damage and skin irritation. Here’s what we excluded:

  • Octinoxate and Oxybenzone
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate
  • Quaternium-15 and Diazolidinyl urea

After wading through hours of reading everything from product specifications, and scientific papers to consumer reviews (plus a few charged debates between us), we were then able to whittle the list down to the 10 top cuticle creams we then brought in to be tested.

How we tested them

We matched the cuticle creams to a cross section of our consumer panelists, in terms of age, lifestyle, skin type and whether they bit their fingers (we agreed that those people were essential to the test process, I am a nail biter and cuticle cream is an essential requirement for my fingers to survive the onslaught!) and then sent out the products for them to test at home, and also got them ready for our in-house panelists.  Once everyone had their products to test, each panelist started by completing the basic statistics for the creams, such as the pack size, texture, packaging and ingredients.

Then, before treating, we each had to test a patch of skin first to ensure our suitability to use the cream. Once that was completed, the instructions were simple, to treat the hands three to four times every day, and to monitor the healing process within the first two days and then after four days, the first week and then again in weeks two to three after the initial testing started, with a final score at the end of week four. So, armed with the products, we incorporated them into our daily beauty routines for the month and monitored the healing and skin reactions.

Once the four weeks were up and we had finished testing the creams and submitted the paperwork for analysis, we waited to find out the results and which ones came out on top.  Then we looked at the current retail prices for each of the creams and found our favorite picks were not always the more expensive ones. Our top pick turned out to be the best value of all of the finalists.
