Best Drones For Kids - Top Rated Kids Drones 2017

Best Toy Drones For Kids

best drones for kids reviews

Drones, or quadcopters, are great fun for the whole family, especially the younger generation. That’s why today we’re focussing on the best drones for kids.

We’ve looked at 58 toy drones and covered more than 140 hours of research and testing to compile this review which lead us to recommend that the DJI Phantom 3 stands out as the best toy drone for kids to buy for the majority of people. This kids drone has an array of useful features and rated the highest with us and our product testing panelists.

Top Pick:

1. DJI Phantom 3

Why are our reviews are trustworthy?

We’ve covered quadcopters here at ReviewLatest.com since they started becoming popular a few years ago and have logged many hours of research and testing (and racing). We’ve looked at a whole host of kids drones to compile this review.

These fantastic, flying machines have seen a surge in popularity recently but the first rotary wing aircraft to lift itself up in the air was designed by Louis Breguet, well over a hundred years ago. The helicopter did only manage to lift itself a few feet but, as they say, you have to start somewhere!

We always stay up to date with reviews from other major companies that also test or review products, such as, Tech Radar, C-Net and Trust Pilot.

Then we do our own testing, ourselves and with members of our consumer product testing groups to provide their feedback through our in depth product testing programs.

*This review covers top drones for kids on the market before and since the last time we created this guide.

Our Other Top Picks:

Who should get these?

Anyone who wants the challenge and sheer exhilaration of flying a drone or perhaps you’re looking to buy a drone as a gift for your child.

As more and more kids across the world are having a blast flying drones around their yards and neighborhoods you may ask yourself, “How do I find the best toy drone for my child?”

A good kids quadcopter could be hard to pick with such a mind-boggling array of features, uses and accessories to choose from. Well, to hopefully save you time, stress and maybe a few bucks, I are providing you the results of our extensive research and testing.

How we began the selection process

We started by noting all of the top rated drones for kids that we could find for sale online in addition to high street stores. We then analyzed literally, thousands of reviews to be able to bring you the essentials on the best kids drone for sale right now.

The things to consider before purchasing a toy drone for your child include: the range and flight time, the type of controller, the amount of settings, accessories and features and how robust the drone is. There are many types of kids drones for sale, and selecting the right one for your needs is vital to making a purchase you’ll be happy with.

Range and flight time, before making your purchase you should consider how far away the drone can go from it’s controller before losing contact, and also how long the drone can fly on a single charge. In both instances, higher numbers are obviously more desirable.

The controller for your kid’s drone could be a traditional hand-held remote control unit, or it may be in the form of an app that can be downloaded on to a cellphone or tablet. Both types of drone controller are fun and easy to use.

The best drones for beginners or children are available with just as many accessories, settings and features as more adult orientated models. Cameras are a popular feature on many quadcopters, in addition there are kids drones that feature stunt capabilities, return to home buttons, extra wind resistance and essential extras such as tools as replacement drone parts.

Durability. Unfortunately, when learning to fly a drone, or even as an experienced drone flyer, accidents can happen. You’ll need to make sure when choosing a drone for your child that you have considered the drone’s build quality, especially in relation to their skill level and what they want to use the drone for. Return to home buttons are a useful innovation for kid’s drones. This feature instructs the drone to come back to base via GPS, this is an excellent feature to have if you’re having a little trouble.

Warranty, the majority of these products come with a standard one year warranty. However, there are some that  come with extended warranty that will give you some longer extra protection. You can also consider buying extra warranty time for some of the more expensive drones.

After scouring everything from scientific papers to manufacturers product specifications and consumer reviews (plus the occasional animated discussion between us all), we were able to get the list down to the top 10 drones for kids we finally selected to be tested.

How we tested them

Quadcopters are great fun. Whether you use them for racing, photography, video or stunts there certainly is something to fascinate most kids. This year we tested the drones after getting a few useful flying tips from Quadcopters And Drones: A Beginner’s Guide, we spent many hours testing different types of kids quadcopter before we settled on the ones for the tests (we have great fun!).

We selected our participants from our product testing programs and then sent out the kids drones for them to test at home, and also got the drones ready for our in-house panelists (including ourselves).  Once everyone had their quadcopters to test, each panelist started by noting down the build quality, settings, size, features and other basic statistics for them.

Then everyone got to grips with their drones, taking down the range, the ease of learning, ease of control and of course, how fun or useful the product was. Everyone then gave a score for each. This process was repeated several times over for each toy drone across all of the panelists.

After a few days the testing period was up, we had finished testing all the drones and the panelists scorecards were taken in ready to be collated.  There was no shortage of excitement in the room as we gathered to find out what the ranking order of the top rated drones for kids were, and after a couple more days the results were in.

We cross-checked the prices and saw that our favorite picks were not always the more expensive ones. Though, on the whole with these products, you generally get what you pay for.

Kids Drones – A Buyer’s Guide

A RC drone (Remote Controlled Drone) is an increasingly popular product in the gadgets industry. It’s a part of electronics. It’s a result of engineering. It’s more than just a gadget. Owning a drone will guarantee long periods of fun for you and the family. RC drones have purpose and are a great way to educate yourself about remote controlled items. Not only are RC drones a great buzz to fly high up in the sky but a fantastically fun toy for adults and kids alike to learn and experiment with.

The drones can undertake aerial photography and capture videos from a birds eye view over a long distance. They provide a fantastic view, perhaps to bird watch, perhaps to watch the night sky illuminate in a city or to follow an animal roaming your neighbourhood but in a more serious fashion, an RC drone can also help with searching for lost personnel such as hikers or lost items. A GPS capability is incorporated within many drones so after entering coordinates you can pre-plan your flight route. You can hover over buildings that you can’t explore and follow an adventure with the drone wherever it takes you.

You are certain to find something you’ve never seen before and with the drone or a quadcopter you can capture that moment to show your friends and family too. RC drones are great for adults but also the best drones for kids. An RC drone is an intriguing and experimental toy sure to keep the child not only occupied but to allow them to learn, question and develop a new skill set. A drone is a toy that provides an experience and something you can take with you on holiday to capture all those special journeys.

In terms of regulation, drones situate themselves somewhere between the traditional aircraft and remote controlled gadgets. As of the current standings, Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) regulations do not apply to those pursuing a hobby. If a drone or quadcopter is purchased solely for business purposes then it is necessary to ensure that you are compliant with local and federal regulations.

Regulations are changing to designate areas for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle’s (UAV’s) in the National Airspace System. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal the FAA may assert that a license is carried by commercial drone drivers. The stipulations also being considered are to limit flying to daylight hours, and also a suggestion proposing that the drone must be within sight of the individual controlling the aircraft and the aircraft hovers under 400 feet for the entire route of its journey. As of the publication of this article, these legislations have not been announced or established but it is sensible to be aware that progress is being made with a view to implementing these changes.

It is important to state however that a drone is not a complicated piece of kit to use, the use for them is already worldwide but equally depending on your required usage you can get drones specifically aimed for beginners and then the more professional drones. The difference will be in what they do. The more commercial the intended use the more professional a drone would be needed. Once you have come to grasps with the drone itself, the drone’s camera and the remote control you will be sure to be having fun time and time again.

As you can see drones are great for kids and adults alike but the question is how do you master them? Well here is some useful information to help give you the basics;

Manual vs Automatic Modes

There is an assist facility with many kids drones that allows an adult to supervise with the flying of the drone and there is also a manual capability which allows the child to have full control. It may be under the label “control sensitivity” where quadcopters are concerned. The auto mode provides a general ease when getting to know the drone so as a beginner or for a child this may be a good way to master the basics of control. Once the child has grasped the basics and are at ease with the drone, they can then switch over to a manual setting. The confidence of using the drone will grow if you are confident at the beginning so easing into the learning experience with auto mode is sure to help master the art of RC Drone flying.

Wind

The wind and the trajectory of the wind will inevitably cause changes to the way in which you must manage control of the drone. You may have mastered the art of flying the drone but nature will test you. Every pilot experiences this and then learns to adjust control because the wind will cause the drone to deviate. And so the camera footage that you want to capture may also be changed from an angular point of view. In a worst case scenario the quadcopter may fly into a tree and suddenly the footage would be brought to an abrupt stop. It may be best to start flying the drone when there is little to negligible wind, and then from understanding the drones movements the child can practise on a windy day. Moving off from a low position near the ground and at a low speed may help the child to learn about the adjustments that need to be made to fly in the wind. It’s actually an interesting experience and an amusing learning curve watching how the RC drone reacts in those windy conditions.

GPS and Home Functions

The built-in GPS (present in many intermediate and advanced drones) means you are able to pinpoint the drone’s whereabouts so you can recover the drone. Furthermore GPS allows the child to prioritise taking cool photos and videos instead of acting as the pilot. There are bound to be images that crop up that deserve to be snapped and this lets you do that.

Creativity- Building an obstacle course

Designing an obstacle course is a fun way to bring adventure to your home (or the spots of nature in your hometown) with your drone. You can set the mini quadcopter to race in spirals or zigzags, to move through hoops, to go under and over branches or any kinetic movement that the drone will pass through, over or under without harm. It could be set in a competitive environment for a bit of family fun. You could even set a stopwatch to see who’s the master. A great party game or just fun for the family on a sunny (or windy) day!

Education – Teaching kids to repair/maintain their own drone

Kids love learning. And one of the first lessons with a drone that every user has to deal with is that first crash landing. It’s an inevitable occurrence for every beginner. It’s great way to introduce the art of repair and to develop technical engineering skills so that the change/repair of propellers, batteries, blade guards, motors and other parts is never an issue. Repairs can seem intimidating but with great online tutorials and step-by-step videos which are easily accessible, it’s nowhere near as difficult as it may seem at first glance.

Emergency Shut Off

If it is realised that the drone is very soon to hit a crash landing or plummet into a tree, the emergency shut off is a valuable ability as it will shut off the drone’s propellers preventing damage to them. The crash landing will at this point be a matter of when and not if, so by using the emergency feature you are being sensible to minimise damage to the drone, other objects in the way and most importantly people.

Extra Batteries

The best mini drone is the one that is always carried alongside a set of extra batteries. Time flies when you’re having fun…That’s true but where a quadcopter is concerned the battery drains while you are having fun. Keeping an extra set of batteries means that you can charge the flat batteries, insert a full set and keep flying. It’s less drama. More fun. If the worst happens and those batteries flatten then you can use the ones you just charged, it’s a win-win. Batteries can be found relatively cheap and are a small investment when compared to the flying time they will boost.

In order to make sure that the drone flying is safe as well as fun, below are further advanced tips to ensure that his or her remote controlled drone flying experience is as wonderful as it should be;

Register with the FAA

This is not legal advice and we are not legal advisors. However, there is a new law which states a requirement for certain drone owners to adhere to registering with the FAA. It’s a quick and easy process. No need to stress. The affected drones are that which qualify to the criteria of either; weighing in excess of 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less than 55 pounds (25 kg). This weight is inclusive of the loads the drone may carry such as cameras, mounts, attachments etc. There’s no need to panic as the registration is quick, easy and currently only $5.

Read the Manual

Reading the manual may be a thing of the past to a lot of people. The instinct is often to “work it out” but safety is paramount. With a product like a drone, it is sensible to be aware of any hazards. The quadcopter works with motors that spin in fast rotations taking the drone high but also crash landings are real occurrences where the plane will suddenly plummet downwards. For preventative measures of crash landings and unwanted movements it is best to read the manual to grasp the safety measures (such as the emergency shut off) alongside learning how to control (pilot) the quadcopter.

Understand Restricted Areas

Visiting a national park, Disney Land or perhaps the White House? Some advice… Do not under any circumstances bring your drone unless you want to be heavily fined, or worse arrested, interrogated and put under suspicion. Making sure to check guidelines before taking your drone to an area is a very smart thing to do. If you have an inkling it may be restricted and common sense implies it may be then taking a no drone use policy will not cause any trouble. The best way to make sure is quite simply to check. State parks, National Parks, monuments and areas very near the presidential home are vigilantly guarded therefore any restricted use of the drone may end up with prosecution and/or a heavy fine as a Virginia man found out. The man incurred a hefty fine for using his drone in close proximity of the National Mall. There is a lesson to be learned from that.

State Drone Laws

30! Yes thirty states have drone laws that of course one must adhere to, and where a child is under your supervision it is your responsibility to make sure that all laws are conformed to. The laws may specify regulations on different factors in relation to flying drones. It is best to check all requirements and to see if the state regulations are linked to your home state also.

Rules and guidelines (Beside Federal and State Laws but may also actually need respecting through the law)

Keep the drone in line of sight. If the drone is out of sight then unlike the saying (out of mind) you may be causing danger to something or someone. The drone when in flight must not exceed 400 feet from ground. This is one way in which a drone can go missing and become eternally lost. The more concerning issue is the chance of it interfering or becoming a danger to aircraft. This kind of irresponsible behavior can lead to hefty fines and serious implications in terms of penalties.

It’s a sensible ploy to understand the battery life so you can be sure of the route your drone will take to its destination and then back. Another must is to avoid hovering over crowds or manoeuvering the quadcopter over people, whether it is an individual or it is masses (or any number in between).

You can never be certain of the movement of the drone as sudden changes to wind, or sudden obstructions or object interferences could push the drone off course into someone or people. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Abide by the laws of the land and the laws of common sense.

Finally, getting insurance is a practical tip. If the drone is a spend of more than a few dollars getting an insurance policy may just be worth those cents in the long run.
