Why our reviews are trustworthy
We have covered ice cube trays here at ReviewLatest.com for a few years now and have logged countless hours of research and testing. We’ve looked at a large number of different types of ice trays, from cool ice molds, sphere ice trays, unique ice trays and large ice trays to create this review each year. We always keep up with reviews from other noteworthy companies that also test or review products, such as, Consumer Reports, Amazon and Which? though we do find sometimes that the coverage is not as comprehensive as it could be. Then we do our own testing by selecting our participating experts, ourselves and members of our consumer product testing groups to provide their feedback through our product testing panels.
*This review covers the best ice trays on the market before and since the last time we created this guide.
How we began the test selection process
We started by making a list of all of the best ice trays sets that we could find for sale in retailers stores and online. We listed 31 ice trays in the original selection process for this category.
We combed through thousands of reviews to be able to bring you the most helpful, insightful information on the best ice trays available. And there are so many variables to get right: the material, the tray size (12, 14 or 16), and lids. There are countless styles of ice cube trays out there, making water into every size and shape of ice imaginable.
We found in our research that covered ice cube trays are great for keeping smells out, but some designs worked better than others, however, they all succeeded in preventing spilling when being moved from the sink to the freezer after filling. The best covered ice trays not only stops spills and keeping smells out, but also allow the tray to be stored at an angle. When stacked, an ice tray with a lid also keeps the tops of the ice cube shapes clean if you stack other things on top.
We were then able to whittle the list down to the 13 ice trays we brought in for testing to see if they make perfect ice cubes.
How we tested them
We wanted to see if there were any major differences in cooling or melt rate based on the ice cube shapes (square, round, half-moon, rectangular) and surface area of the unique ice cubes with the 13 trays we were testing. We knew from previous years testing that large ice cube molds the slower they melt so this years, but we really wanted to see if there were any major differences in cooling or melt rate based on shape alone.
To do this, we poured 15ml of water per mold in each of the 13 unique ice cube trays and then waited while they froze overnight. The next morning, we added three ice cubes from each tray to 300ml of room temperature water in glasses (ones that we were looking at for another review); the total weight of the ice cubes was around 54 grams (18 grams per cube).
The results of the test revealed that the shape of the ice cube shapes at this size doesn’t make a substantial difference to how quickly or slowly it melts. So we concluded our testing by looking at the other areas of interest and scoring them all accordingly.
Each panelist then selected their top rated ice cube trays before comparing the prices of each and coming up with the overall winner with the most picks.
