Why our reviews are trustworthy

I have covered kitchen products here for a long time now, being the only qualified chef in the team (although I do recieve a great deal of help from everyone).  I have spend over 30 years of my life in and out of domestic and commercial kitchens and like to be able to use my knowledge to help others.  For this review alone we have logging over 96 of hours of research and testing this year alone.

We’ve looked nearly at all types of electric corkscrews and consulted with wine specialists and engineers to keep up this review. We also keep up with reviews from other noteworthy companies that also test or review products, such as, Reevoo, ConsumerReports and Good Housekeeping though we do find that the coverage is not as comprehensive as it could be.

Then we do our own testing of the products and also look at how other people rate them after they have product tested them at home for us and provide their feedback through our product testing.

How we selected

We began the selection process by finding all of the best electic wine openers for sale online or in store. We ended up with 28 listed in our excel spreadsheet. We wanted to find one that were easy to use, had a simple design and were able to, for the price, consistently remove corks at the flick of a switch at a reasonable, gentle speed.

We sifted through literally hundreds of reviews on each product in order to show you the most helpful information about each of the products and ultimately which is the best one. These purport to be the top electric wine openers among a plethora of mediocre products.

There are plenty of things you need to consider when buying a wine opener. Here are some of the more important factors we took on board.

Screw Length

A wine opener needs to have the proper length in the screw to be able to remove the cork from the bottle efficiently. If the screw is too short, you could end up tearing up the cork and you and your guests will spend the evening spitting out pieces of it instead of relaxing and enjoying your wine. The best electric wine openers will have a screw that is at least 1.75 inches long.

Gentle Extraction

Wine sometimes has sediment lying at the bottom of the bottle. A wine opener which requires a lot of strength to extract the cork will shake up this sediment. We looked for ones that removes the cork from the bottle gently without shaking it up.

Strength

If a wine opener relies solely upon a person’s strength to extract the cork, the whole thing can become an exercise in frustration. You will want something that has a button, so that brute strength is not required to open the bottle. If you don’t have a lot of hand strength, an electric corkscrew might be your best bet

Worm vs. Augur

Go for a wine opener that has a spiral worm or screw as opposed to an augur. An augur has a worm wrapped around a straight metal nail. It may look more efficient, but augurs have been known to shred or tear up corks

Budget

What can you afford? A basic corkscrew is the easiest on your purse or wallet since it costs only a few dollars, while a lever style wine opener or electric wine bottle opener can cost anything between $20 and $50. If cost is your only objective the corkscrew will do but remember that it isn’t as durable as the more expensive types of wine openers.

Space

Another decisive factor is the amount of space you have. If space is at a premium, a corkscrew or a waiter style corkscrew should work best for you. If, on the other hand, you have a lot of countertop space, you can afford to invest in an electric wine opener.

How we tested them

The job of any electric corkscrew is to remove a cork from a bottle with as little effort as possible. This year we tested the corkscrews using a a variety of wines, we spent a long time tasting different types for flavor before we decided on the ones for the test…haha, we were so drunk that night!

We selected our participants from our consumer panelists and then sent the products out to them, so they could test them in their own homes, we also got them ready for us to test.  Once everyone had received their products to test, the instructions were to note down the build quality, size, settings, features and other basic statistics for each product on the scorecards. Over the course of the next few months our testers got the chance to use the corkscrews on wine bottles with different types of cork, both natural and synthetic, in numerous situations and gave their scores for the products in each of the categories we had devised.

We tested the all of the corkscrews in house using a variety of tests, to find out which one performed across the board. Firstly we tested how long they took to remove a natural cork and then ran the same test for synthetic corks. We found the average for natural to be 8 seconds, while synthetic came in at 9 seconds. Next up was grip. We tested the products in a number of common situations, like when your hands are wet or you have several things in your hands at once. Then we looked at charging times and battery life, we found that most of the chargers recharged in six to eight hours, and that they it lasted 41 – 57 minutes before needing a further charge.

After a couple of months the testing (tasting) was all fininshed and we had completed the testing of all of the electirc corkscrews, all of the scorecards were analyzed to find out the ranking order of the best electric corkscrews for home use.  We then checked the latest retail prices for each one and found our favorite models were not always the most expensive ones.  Depending upon all these factors I have provided, you need to think and make your choice. Remember, though, that the expensive models may look better but, in terms of durability, they aren’t that far ahead of their cheaper cousins.

Why Buy A Electric Wine Bottle Opener?

Wine goes with pretty much any occasion, be it a birthday, an anniversary, a celebration or even just a quiet night at home. Choosing the right wine for the right occasion may be an art, but choosing the best electric wine opener is a matter of knowing what makes the most efficient wine opener. The wrong type of wine opener can leave you with a cork that’s in shreds and, in the worst case scenario, even pieces of that cork floating up in your wine.

One of the ways you can determine what electric wine opener will work best for you is to peruse some of the electric wine opener reviews. However, that is not the only way you can determine what would suit you best. There are plenty of wine openers available in the market, both electric wine openers and manual ones.

Manual wine openers come in plenty of styles, one of the most popular of which is the lever style. How this type of opener works is very simple: when you press the lever, the metal rod, which is coiled in a spiral and is referred to as a worm or a screw, drives into the cork. When you pull the lever back up, the screw pulls the cork out from the bottle. To remove the cork from the screw, you need to simply repeat the maneuver. However, these wine openers come with the twin problems of price and durability. A lever style opener can break after some time and repeated use. In addition, it is more expensive than a simple corkscrew and can range up to $100.

Another type of manual wine opener, and one that has been around for quite some time, is the traditional corkscrew. The metal worm or screw is attached to a handle. In order to open a bottle of wine, you need to drive the screw into the cork by twisting the handle. Once the screw has gone in completely you need to move the handle about to remove the cork from the bottle. Unfortunately, this method relies almost completely upon strength. Even then, you need to be careful about how much strength you apply. Too little and the cork will remain in the bottle and too much and you risk breaking the neck of the bottle. Nobody wants to drink shards of glass with their wine. Corkscrew openers can be quite cheap, but the unreliability of the method means you need to look for a viable alternative. This is where an electric wine opener can help.

An electric wine opener, as the name suggest, relies upon battery power to do its job. It comes with a recharging base so you can use it any time and pretty much any where. The electric wine bottle opener is the simplest of all wine openers in terms of operation. All you need to do is line it up with the cork and push the button. The electric corkscrew opener does the rest and you can sit back and relax. This type of wine opener is not too expensive – somewhere between a corkscrew and a lever style wine opener. The only disadvantage is that the electric bottle opener is not meant to be stored in a drawer but on a countertop, so it might create a bit of an issue with space.
