Why our reviews are trustworthy

We have covered electric toothbrushes here at ReviewLatest.com for a few years now. While oral hygiene is taken more seriously than ever before, it is estimated 30% of people still don’t brush their teeth twice a day as recommended. Do you?

Since we started covering them, we have logged many hours of research and testing (Mainly in the morning). We’ve looked at a whole range of electric toothbrushes to create this review each year. We always stay up to date with reviews from other major companies that also test or review products, such as, Trusted Reviews, Which? and Gizmodo. Then we do our own testing by consulting experts (see credits at the end), and testing ourselves and with members of our consumer product testing groups to provide their feedback through our in depth product testing programs.

*This review covers top electric toothbrushes on the market before and since the last time we created this guide.

Our Other Top Picks:

Who should get this?

Everyone who cares about the health of their teeth and gums, or if you own one already, have a look at the best ones in this article and ask yourself: “Self, would you say such complimentary things about the electric toothbrush you have right now?” If the answer is anything other than “Yes”, it’s time to use this review to get yourself a better one.

Now, we all know that cleaning our teeth is an essential part of our daily routine, but are you brushing too hard? Do you suffer with arthritis or mobility problems? Do you brush for long enough? A good electric toothbrush could help but with a bewildering array of features and accessories, how do you know which is the best electric toothbrush for you? Well, to try and put an end to all this madness, and to hopefully save you time, hassle and maybe a few bucks here and there, we are providing you the results of our research and testing.

How we began the selection process

We started by listing all of the top rated electric toothbrushes that we could find for sale in high street stores as well as online. We then pored over literally, thousands of reviews to be able to bring you the lowdown on the best electric toothbrush on sale right now. We listed 31 in the shortlist for this category.

There are so many variables to get right: the power supply and battery life, the ergonomics, the amount of settings and features, the type of brush head and how effective they were at cleaning teeth. There are many types of electric toothbrush for sale, and selecting the right one for your needs is vital to making a purchase you’ll be happy with.

Power and battery life, prior to making your purchase you should consider how often you are likely to charge your toothbrush. During our testing, we found that battery life can vary considerably, with the least powerful brushes lasting for just 15-20 brushes while others were still going strong after 80 brushes.

You’ll want your brushing experience to be comfortable as well as effective, ensure the ergonomics of the brush suit your needs. Is the grip comfortable? Does the brush head reach everywhere it needs to?

The best electric toothbrushes come with a variety of settings and features, these can include 2 minute timers, brushing modes, pressure sensors, replacement brush heads, quadpacers, digital displays and accessories such as travel cases or electric toothbrush sanitizer to keep your device germ free.

Electric toothbrush replacement heads are often included with the product, this is a welcome addition as packs of brush heads can be pricey. Electric toothbrush heads come in a range of sizes and are designed to do different jobs, many concentrate on removing plaque while other brush heads buff like a hygienist’s tool or have “flossing” strips to clean between the teeth.

Of course, the effectiveness of your electric toothbrush is paramount. Powered toothbrushes work in a number of ways, from oscillating, rotating and pulsing to the high speeds and frequencies of sonic electric toothbrushes. This being said, all our research suggests that it is more important how you brush than what you brush with.

Warranty, most of these products come with a standard one year warranty. However, there are some that  come with extended warranty that will give you some longer extra protection. You can also consider buying extra warranty time for some of the more expensive electric toothbrushes.

After scouring everything from scientific papers and dentistry publications to manufacturers product specifications and consumer reviews (plus the occasional animated discussion between us all), we were able to get the list down to the top 10  electric toothbrushes we finally chose to be tested.

How we tested them

The primary function of a powered toothbrush is to keep teeth and gums healthy. This year we tested the toothbrushes after getting a few handy tips from Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth, we spent many hours testing different types of electric toothbrush before we settled on the ones for the tests (another of the fun parts of this review).

We selected our participants from our product testing programs and then sent out the brushes and guidelines for them to test at home, and also got the toothbrushes ready for our in-house panelists (including ourselves).  Once everyone had their power toothbrushes to test, each panelist started by noting down the build quality, settings, size, features and other basic statistics for them. Then everyone got to work and cleaned their teeth, taking down the level of comfort, the ease of use, ease of cleaning and of course, how effective the product was. Everyone then gave a score for each. This process was repeated several times over for each device across all of the panelists.

After a few days the testing phase was complete, we had finished testing all the toothbrushes and the panelists scorecards were taken in ready to be analyzed.  There was certainly some big, white smiles in the room as we gathered to find out what the ranking order of the top rated electric toothbrush was, and after a couple more days the results were in.  We cross-checked the prices and saw that our favorite picks were not always the more expensive ones. Though, mostly with these products, you generally get what you pay for.

4. Balance Sonic Electric Toothbrush

Price: $19

Buy Now

Balance sonic toothbrush is able to clean your teeth thoroughly to maintain your oral health. Ideally, this toothbrush has two separate mechanisms which makes it one of the best electric toothbrushes in the market today.

Sonic toothbrush uses mechanical scrubbing as the main mechanism to remove dental plaque. This mechanism involves the use of bristles to scour the surface of the teeth. The effectiveness of this toothbrush depends on the amplitude of the head (the distance the head moves up and down in each stroke) as well as its frequency (the number of strokes made per minute). With most electric toothbrushes using this mechanism, you can read available electric toothbrushes review online to clearly understand how it works.

Secondly, sonic brushes uses fluid dynamics as the secondary cleaning action. In fluid dynamics, the bristles are used to agitate the fluids (water and saliva) around the teeth of the user to disrupt plaque colonies which could have been formed. This is one feature which make balance sonic electric toothbrush unique.

Pros

This toothbrush cleans your teeth 10× better than manual brushing

Sonic toothbrush is available and can be used in four modes i.e. clean, whiten, sensitive and gum massage.

With a smart timer feature, the brush can be set to a 2 minute cycle and a 30 seconds quadrant reminder

Sonic toothbrush comes with an easy to use interface with one button to switch the modes and a second button to start/stop the cleaning cycle

Cons

The brush may not be affordable to all people

5. Oral-B White Pro 1000

Price: $41

Buy Now

Oral-B makes perhaps the best electric toothbrush for a first time user. The Oral-B White Pro 1000 has a couple of advanced features but is mostly a good value introduction to powered brushing. Coming from the leading household name in electrical beauty, it benefits from a huge range of replacement heads that are widely available.

It’s ideal for people choosing to go electric for the first time, and also a smart choice for anyone who wants a dependable, gimmick-free brush.

Pros

Competitive price

Lots of brush head options, available everywhere

Excellent mouth feel and impact on initial use

Cons

Basic model with very few special features

Performance

There are no particular settings, just a single Daily Clean mode, and a 2-minute timer that is always on. There’s plenty of power, enough to feel a good clean between the teeth, and possibly a little gum bleeding the first time or two, but the auto cut-off is a neat feature for first-timers to prevent any unnecessary damage or pain.

If you don’t like the shape or feel of the standard CrossAction head, there are at least eight options that will fit – wide, narrow, softer, polishing, interdental and other specialist heads.

Settings/Features

The Pro 1000 has a two-minute timer that audibly tells you when you’ve reached the dentist-recommended minimum of two minutes’ brushing. This can’t be turned on and off, but it’s a useful indicator that will help you achieve a good thorough clean each time.

It will also cut off automatically if you press too hard, which can be a little irritating but will guide you towards better technique, less pain and longer brush head life.

Ease of Cleaning

The unit is pretty water resistant, just double check it’s all completely dry before docking with the charger. The brush heads snap on and off easily making it easy to clean them thoroughly (and share the unit with someone else).

Ease of Use

Just plug in the mains charger and leave it a few hours. In fact it’s ready to use after only a few minutes, and the charge is more than enough for a few days of brushing, so you’ll have no worries if you forget to charge it (or take it away for a weekend)

Durability

Oral-B have been making a range of these for years, and with simple parts and no battery compartment to open it all seems solid and durable. The brush heads indicate some wear within a couple of weeks but they only start to feel softer after about a month.

Dimensions: 2.2″ x 4.4″ x 10″

Shipping Weight: 10.6 lbs

Warranty and Support

This electric toothbrush comes with a 12 month warranty as standard with the option to purchase cover for a further 2 or 3 year period.

Conclusion

The effective angled bristles on the CrossAction brush head make an impressive upgrade from a manual toothbrush, or even a battery powered one. The Oral-B White Pro 1000 also packs a bit more power and is attractively simple to pick up and use, and live with.

It doesn’t have any advanced settings but the features it does have are useful guides. You’ll soon be needing replacement brush heads and the huge range of Oral-B ones that are readily available make the White Pro 1000 an excellent starting point, possibly the best electric toothbrush for a first time user with access to mains power for charging it.

6. Wellness HP-STX

Price: $39

Buy Now

In this sonic electric toothbrush review we sample the Wellness HP-STX, a sonic wave toothbrush pitched at users looking to upgrade their dental health routines and experience improved results over manual brushing.

It promises to deliver whiter teeth in as little as one week, and features 34,000 strokes per minute, multiple brushing modes and a set of brush heads with color coding so all the family can feel the benefit.

Pros

Gentle action and soft, rounded brush heads are ideal for first-time electric users

Good value for a sonic toothbrush

Useful multiple modes and quadrant timer

Generous supply of brush heads for long-lasting family use

Cons

Not as many replacement head options as bigger brands

Some may want to feel more power and stiffer brushes

Performance

With three modes available, Power/Clean, Soft/Gentle and Massage, there should be a setting for all occasions. The bristles are relatively soft and some users felt as if it wasn’t doing as much as other brushes. But the clean mouth feeling afterwards got good ratings. The Wellness HP-STX holds its charge well, enough for over two weeks of brushing twice a day. The two-minute shut-off helps with that.

Settings/Features

There are three power modes, indicated by lights on the handle. Automatic timing alerts you to move on to the next mouth quadrant every 30 seconds, and shuts off power after two minutes to guard against gum recession or other overuse injuries.

Ease of Cleaning

Everything rinses easily in running water. The brush heads detach easily. They are stored, hygienically separated, in a rack on the charger unit.

Ease of Use

The brush heads are brightly color coded with bristles in different shades for easy identification. A full charge lasts for several days, although it can be difficult to tell if the unit has finished charging as the light remains on while it is docked.

Durability

Everything fits together well and the charge and power delivery was consistent throughout our tests.

Shipping Weight: 4.3 oz

Warranty and Support

There is a full 12 month warranty for the Wellness HP-STX.

Conclusion

With some helpful features and attractive design, the Wellness HP-STX is one of the best sonic electric toothbrushes for individuals and families trying an electric brush for the first time. It has some of the most distinctive color-coded brushes for easy identification, and a generous supply of replacement heads. It is inexpensive to stock up with further supplies once they run out, although there’s less choice than the big manufacturers and some may find the standard brushes feel too soft.

The Wellness HP-STX certainly delivers giving a better clean than a manual toothbrush, and the competitive price will give you all the more reason to smile.

7. Pursonic S520 Black Electric Toothbrush

Price: $39

Buy Now

The Pursonic S520 Black is a sonic electric toothbrush that offers a good range of premium features and settings to a high value package. It offers much more than other entry level electric toothbrushes around the same price point, boasting 40,000 sonic strokes per minute and a bundle of replacement heads, attachments and tongue cleaners plus travel bag and protective head covers.

Pros

Value pack with numerous attachments and spare brush heads to last for months

Thoughtful travel caps and features for sharing with multiple users

Useful 30-second quadrant timer

Different modes make it ideal for more people with more sensitive mouths

Cons

Black finish looks smart but shows white stains easily

Replacement heads not as readily available or versatile as more familiar brands

Performance

The brush heads are longer than some, and lack the multiple designs and shapes that a big hitter such as Oral-B can offer. But the different modes include some gentler settings such as Massage, with fewer oscillations, that will avoid pain and injury to unfamiliar gums, and everyone should be able to find a comfortable and effective setting for them. That makes it a great first step into electric toothbrushes.

Settings/Features

The generous bundle of tongue cleaners and floss heads is more than just a long-lasting value pack. It should also encourage good hygienic habits and extra dental care besides brushing. That and the color-coded brush heads and included travel bag and cover make it a tempting upgrade for professional singles, couples and families who are keen travelers.

Ease of Cleaning

It’s easy and safe to rinse with water, but it seems to take extra effort with this finish to keep it black and not white!

Ease of Use

The dock charger is quite wide, which may be an issue if bathroom shelf real estate is limited. But it docks with a light touch and successfully every time, and requires only a few minutes’ charging time to be usable again.

Durability

For the features and price it feels like a well made brush. It’s solid, weighty and free of any rattles and looseness.

Dimensions: 9.5″ x 3.1″ x 6.3″

Shipping Weight: 1.4 lbs

Warranty and Support

Pursonic offers a 1 year warranty with the S520 Black electric toothbrush.

Conclusion

The generous package gives this Pursonic electric toothbrush good ratings from a value point of view. There’s enough replacement and alternate heads to last a family for months. Items like floss and tongue cleaners are thrown in for free, which should encourage better hygiene than having to buy them separately.

The brush performs well and feels like an advanced piece of equipment with the different modes and oscillations. For a sonic device it’s excellent value for money.

The style factor is a bonus – the black and silver docking station would look at home in an office rather than a bathroom. It would sit just fine next to a men’s shaver. The only down side is that white toothpaste stains show up easily on black.

8. Poseidon Oral Irrigator and Sonic Toothbrush

Price: $89

Buy Now

The best electric toothbrush needs to have an effective charger to stay that way. So it makes sense to maintain your Oral Irrigator and Sonic Toothbrush at full charge by using the dual inductive charger. All you have to do is plug them in together and they are certain to get fully charged.

To go along with the thorough charge both of these devices come with an automatic switch off after two minutes of inactivity. So even if you forget to switch them off then the batteries will not run flat. The irrigator and the toothbrush are low noise models, which are powered on lithium ion power cells as well as being BPA-free and also approved by the FDA.

Pros

Good Looking Design – the design is bold and attractive, and the toothbrush is a strong performer.

Highly Effective Plaque Removal – the combination of two devices in a single unit allows you to have clean and plaque free teeth.

The features show it is among the highest electric toothbrush ratings.

Cons

A little more expensive than other models.

Performance

There are three different settings for the Poseidon Oral Irrigator, namely normal, soft, as well as pulse. You can change the settings to suit yourself. The Poseidon can be used by up to three users as it has three interchangeable heads. These three heads are different colors so that users can each have a different color from the others.

Durability

It is well made and durable.

Product Warranty and Support

Satisfaction guaranteed 100 %

Original purchaser has a 12 month guarantee

Extras

Easy to Use – simply to put together and to use

Saving Space – one base unit means less space taken up

Extra Heads – three heads to allow three users

Conclusion

Many different studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are so much more effective at cleaning teeth than manual toothbrushes. With it’s three settings of clean, soft plus massage besides 31,000 pulses every single minute it is little wonder that the Poseidon Sonic Toothbrush will leave your teeth cleaner than you have ever experienced before.

This brush provides 30 second bursts, which stop to remind you to move on to another part of your mouth. Again it comes with three different colored heads to allow color coding and three people to use the same unit.

As a dental floss the Poseidon Oral Irrigator is the most effective type that you can use. All irrigators provide a deeper clean than the dental floss tapes you could use instead. The Poseidon works by using streams of water to clean teeth, between teeth and gums. Although the pulsed streams used by irrigators are gentler than using manual or electric toothbrushes and traditional string dental floss they clean in places the others are unable to reach. These irrigators are particularly useful in cleaning around bridgework, caps, and also braces. Teeth are cleaner without risking such dentistry.

Best Electric Toothbrushes – A Buyer’s Guide

Invented in the 1950’s, the electric toothbrush did not gain popularity until about fifteen years ago. They were originally marketed to people with arthritis and special orthodontic problems. The first models plugged into a regular wall socket. This was not an optimum situation for a lot of people and eventually became a problem because they did not pass industry standard codes. Manufacturers worked on the design and eventually produced more self sustaining models that received better electrical toothbrush ratings and adhered to accepted electrical standards. When all the bugs were worked out, electric toothbrush sales exploded. With this explosion came a surge of new and different models. You can choose from a inexpensive model to a model costing close to $200 and anything in between.

So how do we know what the best electric toothbrush is or even if we should choose an electric toothbrush? When choosing a new toothbrush you have three main options. You can choose from manual, electric and sonic. Deciding which manual toothbrush to purchase is fairly simple. The main concerns for manual toothbrushes are brushing technique and and a person’s age and or size. Electric toothbrushes and sonic toothbrushes, however, have marked differences. Their features can include a whole different array of assets for people’s general dental health. Our reviews cover both of these.

There are generally two different types of electric toothbrushes. They can be either vibrating or rotating. A vibrating toothbrush moves up and down and functions greatly like a manual toothbrush. These brushes do much more work for you than a manual toothbrush however. A rotating brush turns either clockwise or counterclockwise and does most of the work for you as you move from tooth to tooth. There are several things to consider when looking at electric toothbrush ratings. Both sonic and electric brushes emit a sound. Some people may find this sound irritating. Vibrating at 24,000 to 48,000 movements per minute, the sonic toothbrush produces an audible hum. Some brushes are even faster and are called ultrasonic brushes. These move at 2.4 million movements per minute. The sound of an ultrasonic brush exceeds anything a human can hear and eliminates the sound all together. Brushes can be purchased that work in both modes. The electric toothbrush makes a mechanical sound that you can associate with anything that has motorized cog system. You can also see the movement of the the electrical toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes do have their problems. Be it the higher cost of more higher quality brushes or the cost of battery replacement for a battery operated model, the cost can be a consideration for some. The higher quality brushes sell for $100 to $200, turning off some consumers before they even look at the added benefits They have accessories or charging stations that can take up a lot of space on your bathroom counter. For people with smaller bathrooms, space can be an issue, and they may not want to add to the clutter on their already overpopulated counter. Some of the setups that accompany electric toothbrushes do not necessarily match with existing bathroom decor. Usually this equipment comes in all white and may be considered an eyesore. Some consumers are turned off because they consider the equipment just one more thing to clean and wipe down in their daily routine.

The Effectiveness of an Electric Toothbrush

The latest research suggests that there is not much difference in how well manual brushes and electric brushes clean plaque. This may leave you asking, “Are electric toothbrushes better?’. Electric toothbrushes usually have other features that justify their cost and lesser appreciated traits. A lot of electric toothbrushes have time maximizing features that their users need. Brushing for two minutes is the accepted practice for maintaining good mental health. While most of us think that we brush for the full two minutes a great majority of us do not. There are electric toothbrushes that have the capability to turn off when the two minutes are up and let you know when you are done brushing. They also have timers that will alert the user when they need to move the toothbrush to another section of teeth. This is a particularly helpful feature for a children’s electric toothbrush. Helping children to develop good brushing skill is an important benefit.

Another benefit of some electric toothbrushes is a reminder to change your brushheads. When the bristles become old, stiff, or bent they are not doing as good a job as they could and could even cause damage to your dental health. This can make brushing cause more harm than good. People with health issues such as arthritis or people who are easily fatigued can benefit from the work an electric toothbrush can do for them. People who in the past would have skipped brushing on bad days now have a better incentive to keep going. The reduced effort it takes to use a toothbrush with a rotating head helps those with poor motor skills.

Electric brushes are easier to keep clean. Some electric brushes come with travel cases that make transporting easier and helps to keep brushes protected and cleaner longer. Others come with equipment to clean the brushes for you. Less time spent cleaning is very beneficial in today’s world for many people. A further benefit is that habitually hard brushers can get a warning when they are applying too much pressure to their teeth and gums. They even have Bluetooth and smartphone apps that provide information to the user. These programs will also help your track your brushing habits over time and let you know if you are doing better or worse with your technique. These brushes frequently come with other indicators to promote proper brushing and help you improve your dental health.

Electric Toothbrushes: What we tested. What we found.

Our testers tried toothbrushes side by side for several days to find the top electric toothbrush. They tested several models from several different companies. Testers who use manual toothbrushes on a regular basis seemed to prefer thinner handles and softer bristles. The testers also scored the toothbrushes on how clean the may their mouths felt afterwards.

We looked at brushes with additional features. We tested brushes that came with only one head. These brushes were cheaper on the front end but could rack up more charges when replacing numerous heads over time. The brushes that came with multiple heads, usually came with enough spares to last for the lifetime of the toothbrush. They were initially more costly but made up for it when the customer didn’t have to buy new brush heads. Some came with ten replacements. We found that one of the most commonly appreciated feature was the switch- off timer that keeps you brushing for two minutes. The timer that reminded the user to change quadrants in the mouth was also considered helpful and appreciated especially when dealing with the brushing habits of young children.

Travel cases help to sell different models. People enjoyed the convenience of easy travel. Simple setup and separate modes for polishing, whitening, and gum massage were also nice extras. Testers liked to be treated to some simple luxuries. People were also satisfied that they would be lessening their chances of gum recession by receiving notifications when they were applying too much pressure to their teeth and gums.

We also studied some less common features. Flossing water jets are included with some models and are now considered by some to be more effective than flossing adding another time management aspect to the product. Bluetooth features are a happy addition to any model. These included programs to help track brushing habits. We studied UV sanitizers also, but the effectiveness of these has been called into question by other studies and so we did not weigh our findings on the subject as heavily as we did with the other features.

In our efforts to find out what is the best electric toothbrush, we evaluated some rather costly products. Since some brushes can cost neatly $200 we felt it was necessary to check out the companies that made them. First we checked for types of guarantees for each model. Most offered a guarantee from one to two years. We checked out the user’s manuals to see if they were clear and concise and to see if they were offered on the company website with varying results. We also checked company websites for FAQ’s that were relevant and meaningful for people who had purchased an electric toothbrush. Customer Service departments were checked for knowledgeable and helpful representatives that could answer questions in a timely manner when it came to issues such as troubleshooting and setup of the products.
