With this alarm clock, you’ll never have to squint to see the time again, especially if you’re one of those who wakes up after every short interval. The best thing about this alarm clock is its projection feature that will display the time on the wall or ceiling at a low intensity so that it doesn’t bother you so much.
Why our reviews are trustworthy
We have covered alarm clocks for a couple of years now, since they started to become popular again as a retro gadget. We have covered weeks of research and testing (sleeping mostly!).
Did you know that in China, the striking clock was devised by the Buddhist monk and inventor Yi Xing between 683–727?
We’ve looked at a large number of alarm clocks to create this review. We regularly keep on top of new reviews from organizations that also test or review products, although we do find that the information is not as comprehensive as it should be.
How we selected
There are plenty of features you could ask for and probably get in an alarm clock. However, there are some features that you will definitely need to pay more attention to.
This is, of course, the most important feature of an alarm clock. After all, if the clock cannot tell time accurately, it’s not going to wake you up when you need to wake up. The best alarm clocks to wake you up are the ones that get you up on time. Therefore, one thing you want to check for is accuracy and another thing you want to check is the snooze feature.
This feature is available on even a simple alarm clock. What you need to check for is whether the snooze duration is accurate. You also need to check for how long the snooze will stay activated before the alarm shuts off. If the alarm clock you are considering allows you to set music as your alarm, you need to check that the music turns on and off when it is supposed to and whether the song you have set is the one being played.
Another point to check is that the backup battery of a powered alarm clock will take over, if the clock loses power. You should also ensure that the clock maintains the time when the battery backup kicks in and, of course, whether the alarm still works.
Ease of Use
You definitely don’t want an alarm clock that looks like something off the dashboard of a space shuttle and will take that level of expertise to set. As such, you need features that make setting an alarm and turning it off easy and convenient. You can check alarm clock reviews online to figure out these features or you can actually test the clock before buying it.
A volume setting that allows you to adjust the volume of the alarm is a must. Some clocks will start off softly and then get louder the longer you sleep. Large snooze buttons and alarm clocks with light are also convenient so that you don’t have to grope around to find the clock. Unlike a simple alarm clock, alarm clocks these days also come with features such as adjustable brightness and auto sync time. Some will even adjust the time twice a year to take into account daylight savings time.
Programmable alarm clocks can be even more convenient than a simple alarm clock. Such clocks allow you to set alarms for specific days such as just the weekdays or just the weekends. This way you don’t have to worry about turning the alarm on and off or, worse yet, forgetting to turn the alarm on and off. Once you set your alarm, you can forget about it. There are even alarm clocks which allow you to adjust the snooze time to your sleeping patterns.
In addition to the basic features, you might want other features in your alarm clock to make it more convenient and easy for you to use. You may want a gentle alarm clock that wakes you up using light instead of sound. If you are a sound sleeper, an alarm clock that actually shakes your bed may be just what the doctor ordered.
The Right Sound
Depending upon how deeply you sleep, you need the appropriate sound for your alarm. However, the sound alone is not enough. You will need the right volume – too soft and you won’t hear it, too loud and it will jar you out of sleep in a way that will probably have you swearing never to use it again. This is where alarm clocks with a progressive volume steal a march on the simple alarm clock. For those who are light sleepers, light or vibration can help you wake up.
Date, Temperature and Music
Gone are the days of the simple alarm clock that rang shrilly and merely told you the time. These days, alarm clocks can give you all the information you need to start your day such as what date it is and what the temperature outside is like. There are alarm clocks that have projectors so you don’t even need to turn your head to figure out the time. You can just see it displayed on the wall. Others allow you to plug in your music player or iPod and set songs as alarms.
While smartphones are taking over pretty much all aspects of life, the humble alarm clock has not given up the fight. With continuous innovations and interesting features, alarm clocks have clearly indicated that they are here to stay – at least for a while longer.
How we tested them
To test the creams for this year’s review, we again selected participants from our consumer panelists. We started by selecting participants according to their age and lifestyle.
We then sent the alarm clocks, instructions and score sheets out to them to test for us at home, and took the time to get the products and score sheets ready for ourselves to test. Then when everybody had their alarms clocks, we started by noting down the basic information for each like the pack size, pack type, the build quality and the features.
The instructions were simply to use the alsrm clocks every day for a week and to then give a score. So, armed with our alarms, we incorporated them into our daily routines and monitored our progress.
The testing took just over a month to get finished and then once all of the panelists submitted their score sheets, the results were analyzed and I was charged with writing the review. I hope you like it.

Why Buy an Alarm Clock?
You might wonder why, in this modern world of smartphones and other smart devices, you need an alarm clock. After all, you can merely set the alarm on your phone and it should wake you up when you need it to. However, research has shown that a surprising number of people still use at least a small alarm clock to wake up in the morning, instead of utilizing the various apps on their smartphones. Why? It’s simple; alarm clocks offer a variety of features that your smartphone alarm just cannot match.
The days of the boring alarm clock with its snooze function and loud and shrill alarm are long gone. These days you can find more and more innovative and fun alarm clocks on the market. They can do a lot more than your simple alarm clock of yours could. Can you imagine your smartphone doing that?
In addition, apart from the standard features such as volume control and buttons to adjust the brightness of the display, new alarm clocks are much more accurate than a simple alarm clock. Many of them work off atomic time and have additional features such as radio, which means you can set your favorite radio station as your alarm. You can also choose the noisiest radio station if you are a heavy sleeper. Some alarm clocks have dual alarms so you can set different times for different people. There are alarm clocks that will even charge your smartphone.
For those of you who do not like a loud awakening, alarm clocks with light are the answer. These clocks use light displays to wake you up. To ensure that you wake up, there are some alarm clocks that utilize various methods to make you get out of bed to turn them off. Some even have complicated procedures to switch off the alarm so that by the time the alarm is turned off, you are awake. You can even see temperature displays and the date, as some of them will project the information on your wall. These are definitely a far cry from the simple alarm clocks used by our parents.
